Movie Review

The epic war true story – Unbroken directed by Angelina Jolie follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived on a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII. Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand’s (Seabiscuit: An American Legend).

Characters

Louis Zamperini & Watanabe

Louie is a troubled Italian child who is inclined to alcohol and cigarettes at an early age. He is always caught up in fights with local kids. His elder brother Older Pete, confronts him, about his approach towards life. Pete inspires Louie with some great words. Which puts a tremendous impact on him. Louie gets his acts together and focuses on becoming an Athlete.

At a young age, he becomes a record-breaking first-ever high school Athlete. Louie qualifies for Tokyo Olympics. However, soon his dream of getting gold in the Olympics gets over as soon as WORLD WAR II gets started.

PLOT

Louie Zamperini and two other men, including Phil, survive a plane crash in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. They barely make it long enough to board a raft, where the conditions of hunger, dehydration, and heat exhaustion take their toll. After surviving the 47 draft Louie and Phil get captured by the Japanese army.

They both are sent to the concentration war camp. And they were treated likely at the camp by the enemy. Watanabe the commanding officer, take it out on Zamperini as they know each other from the Olympics. And makes him suffer by punishing and beating him brutally. Being the Olympic Star Louie is given a chance of redemption, he is asked to betray his country in exchange for a better life in Japan. However, he prefers to suffer and face imprisonment and die with pride rather than betraying his country.

The War comes to an End so does the survival struggle for Louie and fellow captive soldiers and they are sent back to their country. Louie completes his dream of running at the Olympics at the age of 80 in Japan. Watanabe the Bird, a war criminal remained in hiding for several years. He was granted Amnesty by the U.S in his efforts for reconciling with Japan.

Takeaways

This is an epic true story that reflects – Human Spirit, Patriotism, Faith, and Hope of survival. Being in the middle of Covid-19 ( The Pandemic ). This is the best thing I have watched so far. And it gives me great joy to write its review in bits and pieces. Although, I would recommend everyone to watch this movie as it’s really inspiring and motivating.

Louis Zamperini always believed in peacekeeping, and he tried to meet everyone from the concentration camp. To spread a message of Peace and Unity among everyone.
